Counselling
Announcement, August 2010
I am pleased to say that my first book, My Other Self: Sexual fantasises, fetishes and kinks, will be published around the end of September as both a paperback and as an e-book. It will be available at www.myotherself.com.au, selected bookstores and Amazon online.
My work may be familiar to those in counselling industry through my role as IT Adviser to the Australian Counselling Association over the past 10 years, from my articles in the ACA’s journal and my writing for the Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors. While exploring and then writing about how people expressed their sexuality in both the real and virtual worlds, I found that community attitudes towards anything other than mainstream sexual practices remain deeply suspicious and judgemental. So began a 4 year project of gathering narratives and interviewing people who enjoyed a wide range of alternative sexual practices, and the result is My Other Self, the stories of ordinary folk quietly leading extraordinary private lives. As well as real-life stories and insights, it contains explanatory background information, links to related interests as well as jargon and search terms.
Lack of understanding and tolerance for difference means that most people whose sexual interests are outside the mainstream need to hide their true selves from family, friends and colleagues; so this book hopes to promote diversity and understanding and open the conversation around a wide range of sexual practices.
